A Simple Laos Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors

Laos can be a really good choice for travellers who love nature and prefer having some flexibility rather than filling every day with attractions. It has historic towns, mountain scenery, rivers, temples and smaller communities spread across different regions. The main challenge for a first visit is deciding how much to cover.

Instead of trying to see the whole country, it helps to choose a route based on how much time you have.

Choosing Your Route

For a shorter trip, northern Laos is easier to manage. Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng can be visited together, with Vientiane added if there is enough time. 

Got a longer journey than southern Laos can include as well. Pakse is a good base for visiting the  Bolaven Plateau which is known for its waterfalls and coffee farms , the 4,000 Islands region offers a different side of the Mekong.

When planning for the route it is better to think about the travel time as well. Two places may sometimes look close on a map but still require several hours of road or rail travel. 

Getting Around

Transport in Laos depends heavily on the route. Domestic flights can save time on longer journeys, while trains and road transport can be useful between several popular destinations.

The Laos-China Railway has also changed travel between parts of northern Laos. For visitors, checking the route before booking accommodation is worthwhile because the most convenient station may not always be in the centre of the destination.

Within towns, walking can work well in places such as Luang Prabang, while local taxis and other short-distance transport are useful when attractions are further away.

What to Eat

Food should be part of the trip rather than an afterthought. Sticky rice is a major part of Lao cuisine, while grilled meats, herbs, vegetables, spicy dips and noodle dishes are common.

Local markets can be particularly useful for trying different foods without planning a formal meal. In tourist areas, restaurants offer a wider range of international dishes, but smaller local places can give a better sense of everyday Lao cooking.

Visa Planning

Visa requirements depend on nationality, so they should be checked before departure. Laos currently provides a tourist eVisa system for eligible passport holders. The official information says applications require a passport bio page and photograph, while the passport must meet the required validity conditions.

Travellers using an eVisa should also check the approved entry points before deciding how they will enter the country. The official system currently lists nine designated ports, including Wattay International Airport, Luang Prabang International Airport and several land and railway crossings.

A little preparation before leaving home can prevent small problems later. Keep copies of important travel documents, check transport arrangements and leave enough flexibility in the itinerary for longer journeys.

Laos is easier to enjoy when the schedule has room to breathe. A few well-chosen stops can give a better introduction to the country than trying to collect as many destinations as possible.
